Tribute

I created the above painting, “The Three Seated Ladies”, in March of 2015, based on the black and white pencil sketch by my father, E.G. Kellett, shown on the right side of this page.

I have long admired this sketch (which clearly demonstrates abilities far superior to mine) and have wondered why my father never turned it into a painting.

With my father’s passing over two decades ago, I have been unable to ask him why he never seized this opportunity.  Nor have I been able to request him to create a painting based on this sketch.  The task thus fell to me.

In creating the above painting, I had to make various decisions about color, proportion, and shading and decided to take some liberty with the composition to create more of a rectangular layout.  The observer will note that the three sitting figures are not as close together as in the original sketch.  This has the effect of simplifying the composition a bit.

By creating this painting, I have managed to not only utilize the sketch’s theme but also to collaborate with my father posthumously.

He would be pleased to know that well after his demise he continues to teach me.
